Last Friday saw an excellent Year 8 debate on whether prisons should place punishment before rehabilitation. A lively exchange of views resulted in a hard earned win for the opposition. Congratulations to Oliver, Nia and Luke who proposed the motion and to Jemima, Sebastian and Ronnie, their opposers. Our thanks to Sam who chaired the debate with aplomb and to his faithful timekeeper, Kevin. What a team! Very well done to you all.
Year 3 are studying ancient Egyptians in history this term and visited The Tutankhamun Exhibition in Dorchester last week for some hands-on learning. As well as looking at the life of Tutankhamun and seeing many replica artefacts belonging to him, the children learned about archaeologist Howard Carter, Lord Carnarvon and Lady Evelyn, and the discovery of the intact tomb in 1922. Thanks to Ms Bresland, Mr Percival and Miss Gibson, along with all the staff at the exhibition, for a fascinating day of history.
It was a pleasure to host our friends from surrounding primary schools Ash, All Saints in Montacute, Chilthorne Domer, East Coker and Preston this morning for our annual Year 6 Mock Trial competition. Although Perrott Hill’s prosecution team did not manage to secure the conviction of Lee Smedley, a suspected fly tipper, they won the competition by virtue of a very strong team performance: not only was the group awarded top marks, but Harry won the individual court artist award, too. Many thanks to Mr Silk, Victoria Pearson and the adjudicating magistrates, Lindsay Wilson, Susanna Hanson and Mary Ellis, who paid tribute to the performance of all the teams; and the biggest well done to our wonderful Year 6s, whose hard work in the run up well and truly paid off.
Year 7 have been working on their entry for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation annual art competition, which encourages creativity, collaboration and concern for our planet. This year’s theme is ‘endangered’, exploring the thousands of species of animal, plant and insects at risk of extinction across the world. So far the art studio is home to a giant cardboard elephant and several large scale drawings of critically endangered animals. Inspired work, team; we can’t wait to see the finished exhibition.
Our Year 5 and 6 girls’ Loft Night on Friday was a huge success, with face masks, movies and much fun and laughter. Many thanks to our amazing boarding staff who work tirelessly to provide the children with such a warm and welcoming place to call home – the children’s smiles say it all!
Many thanks to Jack Howden, Director of Rugby Coaching at Sherborne School, who ran a top coaching session for our senior boys recently. The session was based on moving the ball quickly, with the boys being challenged to look for players in support and work as a team. Jack, who previously worked for Bath Rugby, also refereed our Feltonfleet match last week in the extreme rain. Our biggest thanks to you, Jack, and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Our Nursery and Reception children enjoyed a hugely entertaining and informative trip to Waitrose in Crewkerne this week, to consolidate this term’s learning about food. As well as going behind the scenes and seeing the lorry turntable, they looked at how the food is sourced, stored and distributed. They also got to fill up their trolley and put it through the checkout, before sampling a variety of foods including guacamole, different cheeses and raisin bread. Many thanks to Graham, Natalie, Marie and all the staff at Waitrose for being so wonderful with the children (they even sang happy birthday to Nathan and gave him a cake!). And, of course, to Mrs McCullough, Miss Becky, Miss Sarah and Mrs Bracher for leading such a brilliant morning of hands-on learning.
Many thanks to Mr Eriksson from King’s Bruton for a fantastic indoor hockey training session earlier in the term. The senior girls worked on developing their skills and playing in a new environment, alongside their friends from All Hallows’ School. A top afternoon of hockey.
Year 6 and 7 pupils enjoyed a captivating trip to the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil on Wednesday, to watch the final performance of The Nutcracker. It was an inspirational evening of theatre and ballet, featuring a live orchestra with over 30 musicians! Our thanks to Mr Shortman, Mr McCullough and Mr Silk for masterminding and accompanying the trip.
As part of our renowned Lecture Programme for Years 3 to 8, Perrott parent Simon Cox gave a fascinating insight into rowing at elite level. Simon, who is currently Consultant Performance Director for the Czech national team and is helping them prepare for the Tokyo Olympics, talked through the different roles and responsibilities in a rowing team and the range of techniques used in training. The children particularly enjoyed watching Mr Sheldon being put through his paces on the ergo! Many thanks for a brilliant lecture, Simon.
