Music

"Serious music should be fun, fun music should be serious" Leonard Bernstein

Music is an integral part of the education offered at Perrott Hill. We aim to provide quality musical experience to, and develop the musical potential of, every child. The department recognises music in its varied manifestations – with all its variety of style and purpose.

Performing, creating and listening to music are more than merely enjoyable activities as there is substantial evidence to show that participating in music-making helps to develop a range of positive and transferable skills, including co-operation, concentration, listening, co-ordination and fine motor skills.

Many of the pupils in the preparatory school play one or more musical instruments and work towards graded examsl. Pupils can choose from a wide range of instruments including: piano, organ, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, trombone, drums, violin, viola, classical guitar and electric guitar. Individual instrumental lessons incur an additional charge.

Pupils are encouraged to join an appropriate ensemble, the orchestra or choir, as soon as they are ready; playing and performing with others is an essential part of any musician's development. There are lots of musical activities available including: informal and formal concerts, an annual house music competition, bi-weekly hymn practices and often as part of the year group plays. All types of music are encouraged from Classical to Jazz, Pop, Folk and Rock.
