“Time and space for a full education”

English

Our mission in the English department is to expose every child to positive and engaging learning experiences so that they leave Perrott Hill with a keen desire to read and write for both pleasure and study.

Language and Literature are considered of equal importance; the production of spoken and written English that is clear, concise and correct is learned through exposure to, and the study of, models of good communication in many different styles and contexts.

We provide ample opportunities for each pupil to develop a wide range of speaking skills – from giving instructions clearly to engaging in clear, logical argument with pupils performing in speech competitions, debates and dramatic productions; at some point in the school year, every pupil will have the opportunity to take part in a public performance.

Visits to the theatre and the hosting of additional activities with outside agencies, such as ‘Poetry Slam’, storytellers , ‘The Miracle Theatre’ and the celebration of events such as World Book Day help to enrich the children’s experience of English language and literature.
